Special Gifts Theatre, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that primarily depends upon financial support and contributions from individuals. As our program continues to grow, so does the need for qualified professionals. Each individual that is hired to work with SGT, is an independent contractor*. Many members of the SGT team have careers outside of SGT in their identified discipline. SGT offers after school part-time opportunities. Team members may work one to three times per week depending on their availability.
Classes are structured to be co-taught by at least two teachers and one to two aids. Together, lesson plans and direction for the class is developed. Teachers are guided through this process from veteran team members, Educational Managers and the Executive Director. Depending on the position, additional responsibilities often include attending staff meetings currently scheduled at least twice a month, developing lesson plans with another co-teacher and completing weekly student progress notes. The SGT season runs from August through March with the summers off.
All team members also participate in a Team Development and Interactive Training Workshop prior to the SGT season. This provides an orientation to Special Gifts Theatre and helps begin the planning process for the production season. Professionals who enjoy working with children that have special needs are encouraged to apply.

Volunteer top
Volunteers are also an important part of our Special Gifts Theatre team. Our program could not succeed without the time and talents of our dedicated volunteers. Volunteer opportunities that may be available include but are not limited to:
Production Assistants (PA)
Adult volunteers whose role is to help the children succeed by helping them during dress rehearsals and productions. This includes helping them get into costume, microphone and stage placement, assisting with reciting lines and providing constant reinforcement. A PA is the “proxy parent” while their parent’s enjoy the thrill of being in the audience. PAs are needed during the months of February and March.
Peer Mentors
This mentoring program consists of Peer Mentors, who are able-bodied children that can range in age from eight years old through late teens. These Peer Mentors are then matched one on one with students in the program. The mentors volunteer their time to attend all classes and rehearsals with their “theatre buddy” and are onstage with them during each performance. Read more at Peer Mentors.
Performance Assistance
At the time of the March production, volunteers are needed for collecting tickets, distributing programs, selling raffle tickets, handling concessions and a variety of other tasks that are needed in the main lobby.
Stage/Prop Help
As we move closer to production, we need volunteers to help with stage sets, design, painting and building. Creation and obtaining of props may also be requested.
Professional Support Services
Throughout the year we have fundraisers, activities and events that may require the assistance of photographers, graphic designers, artists, seamstress/costumers, technical specialists (lights and sound), web designers and mailing services.
